Snoopy Doesn’t Suck
Since I was young, I’ve been in love with Snoopy and all the Peanuts characters. I would read the comics and watch all the t.v. specials. Even now I love to watch all of that and I have a nice stash of memorabilia. I still have the plush Snoopy I got when I was 2 years old (he’s missing a nose and I’ve had to sew his arm and leg back on a couple times, but hey, he’s adorable and he’s mine). Those comics are timeless classics, they’re so endearing and full of heart. How can you not love Charlie Brown? Come on, there’s a piece of him in all of us. He may always lose at baseball and he can’t fly a kite to save his life but he’s got spirit, he never gives up. He’s a hopeless romantic, always longing for the affections of the Little Red Haired Girl. And Linus, I always had a crush on Linus, the intellectual in love with his blanket, always ready with a solution. There are so many lovable characters. But I somehow am alone in my love for Peanuts.
It seems the guys I know have been brainwashed by the negativity and violence of society to enjoy or even understand the greatness of Snoopy and The Gang. Is it that I’m too sensitive or nostalgic? Am I just a huge pile of mushy feel-good memories associated with a boy and his dog? Every so often I like to send my friend (we’ll call him ‘greg’) Snoopy e-cards or sometimes a comic. Anyone with a heart would find this kind of thing nice and thoughtful, yes? Not so with cynical, “i eat babies” greg, all I get is:
“snoopy’s a friggin’ idiot! p.s.- so are you?
“Eat (expletive) and die!” (my personal favorite)
Ahh, so nice, so touching. One of these days maybe “greg” will see that all Snoopy wants is a little lovin.* So can anyone help me out here? Am I alone in my principles? Is it so wrong that I think Snoopy is the perfect man? Or maybe all the guys dig it, they’re just afraid or “too macho” to admit it. (ha, macho…whatever) Oh well.
